Fire Mage vs Frost Mage

Post by crackspread on Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:08 pm

Having particular trouble fighting frost mages and frost DK's..

Im specced as 2/31/8 with 2 pts imp coc and 1 pt ice floes.

Yeah, well I dunno theres not a lot to say. They destroy me and I've thought of ways to win but they do not work and the problem still eludes me.

When fighting frost mages, it's their silence that is the real killer. :(

There is already a fire mage guide with tips against frost mages if you can find it. But against bad frost mages just run around them casting scorch, you should only worry about good ones.

I'm losing 0 to 100 to good frost mages, ones with a solid amount of experience and extremely aggressive playstyle.
As, for example, I had one duel vs Fakeyou as frost and it took him rougly 30 seconds to completely destroy me, and I couldn't even get through his shields. He's a much better player than me of course, but nevertheless the result speaks for itself.
You should however have nice chances against those mages who stick to defensive playstyle or just cant keep up enough pressure, then you can easily take over the initiative and try to kill him before ice lances you to death :P

Do you still keep your distance against frost mages? I have tried going for shatter and trying to stop theirs and it seems to work sometimes. I root them and move away to avoid their roots, or DB/CS when they root me and go for a FB+lance.

That depends. If I don't want to risk betting a huge load of damage, I try to stay away. Also there's not much point in staying close unless you're looking forward to do a critical pyro and then combustion.

Yeah, those are usually the times I get close to them, but it doesn't help that they have 2 ice blocks. :(
When would be the right time to go for a combustion against them?

So far none of the mages I dueled IB'd my Combustion. They should have, but none did. Also trying to force IB without Combustion sounds pretty questionable to me.

well there was a time when you were able to deal with frost mages (even the good ones)
I can only tell how it worked (BACK!! in wotlk) I've been hyper aggresive against them using my DB as often as i've been able to.
most of them just didnt know how to react vs firemages.
Usefull in my opinion was stealing the frostbarrier aswell. he either steals it back or you have it, if he steals back get it again then remove it.
With this playstyle i was able to take down a mage (who was much much better than me, as most of the mages[90%?])

but i guess those times are over.

Even a critical pyro will most likely get fully absorbed if he has ice barrier up, so yeah. That's just a waste of CD.

Haha... This is great discussion but I'm glad I'm not the only one who has troubles.

How about just not really trying to "kill" and then wait for a right time to CS/Poly to spell steal all their buffs and a fresh ice barrier and try to bust out a DB to initiate a fight?

It's not that easy to land a sheep in a mirror fight anymore, esp against a frost mage who can pretty much even trinket your blanket cause, well, there's not much for him to trinket.

Speaking of trinkets, if they trinket your DB 99% of times they go for a CS, seems lika a good time to juke.

Although this relies a lot on RNG my preferred way to get pressure off on a frost mage is to basically get ice barrier off with spell steal and the second you do blanket him into a shatter combo/dragon breath. This opens up a lot of room for you to get procs and some solid shatter damage out, although getting ice barrier off when you want isn't really going to happen 100% of the time and can often lead to you looking like a total idiot spellsteal spamming, it really beats trying to burn your way through an ~18k absorb while the frost mage goes to town on you.

That is a good point Diox...

Generally I've been opening with CS to either just spellsteal for the first few seconds or to try and land poly and then spellsteal. It has proven to be the most effective, and then I just keep my eye out for their ice barrier to come up again.

But, forgive me for not being down with the terminology, but what is blanket?

Blank is when you do it without silencing your opponent on cast, so if I silence someone when they aren't casting it is referred to "Blanket CS" because I did it on "blank".
